Susannah
OPERA SUSANNAH / DRINKS AT The VICTORIA CAFE AL GREEN THEATRE
750 Spadina Ave at Bloor
New Pop-Up
Join Beverly for a night at the opera as Toronto City Opera presents Susannah by American composer Carlisle Floyd at the Al Green Theatre, 750 Spadina Ave. at Bloor St. This masterpiece, rarely performed in Canada, is the second most popular American opera after Porgy and Bess with a gorgeously tuneful score rooted in American folk melodies and hymns.
A small town in rural Tennessee is set ablaze when a beautiful young woman unwittingly sparks the jealousy of her repressive religious community and its fiery preacher. Written during the McCarthy years in the US, its themes of oppression, intolerance, and resistance continue to resonate today. The fully staged production will be sung in English with English supertitles. Watch for Beverly on stage in the chorus.
Before the show gather at 5 pm at the Victory Pub at 440 Bloor St W for drinks/food and conversation and greet Beverly who will collect the levy. At 6:30 pm, we will proceed to the Al Green Theatre a short walk away to enjoy the opera. Reservations will be listed under: UK Connexion. Discount tickets are available to UKC members at the code: TCOfamily at $30, $40 and $50. Tickets are available at the website: www.torontocityopera.com. The event is open to 9 members. Contact Beverly by Tues prior at bev.gibson@hotmail.com or 416-465-2613.
